In the May 1 issue of Playback – ‘Onwards and upwards with the arts’ – Robert Armstrong noted that ‘Vision tv became profitable in 1991.’
Technically he is correct in the Vision began operating in the black in 1991, and continues to do so, however, it is important to note that Vision is a not-for-profit enterprise. It is Canada’s only not-for-profit, charitably registered national specialty channel. Revenue in excess of expenses, our ‘profit,’ is channeled directly into programming, particularly into coproductions with independent producers that form a substantial portion of Vision’s 200-plus hours of documentary programming each year.
