The Auditor General’s final report on its special examination of the cbc’s activities, undertaken every five years, this year found that great strides have been made in the areas of strategic planning, facilities management, human resource management, program production, financial information and corporate culture.
The report states, ‘[D]espite uncertainties and budget reductions, and the inevitable stress that they create, Canadian content was increased, no stations were closed, and the cbc remained highly regarded in terms of credibility, quality and support to Canadian culture.’
Areas in need of improvement, according to the report, include a balanced strategy, the external accountability structure, governance relationships, performance information and infrastructure underutilization.
‘We will carefully study and consult on each issue raised in the report, as we are fully conscious there is always room for improvement,’ comments Guylaine Soucier, chair of the cbc board of directors.
cbc management is in agreement with the Auditor General that the need to manage change proactively is critical to the success of the Corp.
The cbc board is encouraged by the Auditor General’s recognition of the effectiveness of the Corp.’s re-engineering process in a time of transition. *
