CBC expanding compression

CBC Television has awarded a $5-million contract to partners Telesat Canada and Norway’s TANDBERG Television to outfit cbc’s English tv network satellite distribution system with what they describe as ‘the world’s most advanced digital video compression technology.’

The technology, whose arrival coincides with the crtc’s move to license a handful of new specialty and pay channels for digital distribution, should allow cbc to improve the quality of its signals on the main network and offer a distinct service to viewers in Northern Canada. *
