Stardom gets off to promising start

Denys Arcand’s star-struck feature, Stardom, racked up $150,000 in cumulative box office in Canada, between its Oct. 27 release and Nov. 5, the final day of its second weekend in theatres, according to figures from Alliance Atlantis Motion Picture Distribution in Toronto. The film has been on 23 screens, 18 of which are in Quebec. Box office in Quebec was $19,854 for six English-track prints and $62,621 for 12 screens showing the French version, according to figures from Alex Films in Montreal.

The film also launched Oct. 27 in the u.s. via Lions Gate in l.a. Lions Gate sets the cumulative box office for the two screens at us$10,632 as of Nov. 5.

Stardom, which was the closing night film at Cannes and opening night film at the Toronto International Film Festival, was made on a $12-million budget. Shortly after the Cannes debut, the Canadian producers reported sales to most foreign territories. At press time, Playback had not received word on the film’s North American p&a budget. *
