Montreal: Several new Canadian films are up for relatively wide theatrical releases, including the ensemble comedy Nuit de Noces, which will be launched on 70 screens June 1, and the teen horror flick Ginger Snaps, which opened across Canada on 84 screens May 11.
Seville Pictures marketing VP Victor Rego says Nuit de Noces from directors Emile Gaudreault and Marc Brunet will have a $650,000 P&A campaign. Teasers have been on local screens since Christmas.
The film stars Genevieve Brouillette and stand-up comic Francois Morency, whose marriage plans are sabotaged by meddlesome friends and family. Denise Robert and Daniel Louis of Cinemaginaire produced.
Ginger Snaps from Toronto director John Fawcett (The Boys Club) is an uncommon Canadian movie, a teen werewolf tale starring Emily Perkins and Katherine Isabelle. According to TVA International, the distrib is pumping more than $1 million into the film’s marketing budget.
Other major Quebec releases on tap include Lea Pool’s coming-of-age story Lost and Delirious, from producer Cite-Amerique. Seville will release the film on up to 40 screens across Canada July 20, following a U.S. platform release by Lions Gate Films in early July.
Alliance Atlantis Vivafilm is prepping a major 70- to 80-print release on Friday, July 13 for Gabriel Pelletier’s teen vampire comedy Karmina 2, the first feature from producer Go Films.
Distrib Equinox Entertainment opens Richard Roy’s latest, the romantic drama Cafe Ole, across Quebec on June 1. It’s produced by Ficciones Films and stars Spanish actress Laia Marull, with music by Michel Rivard.
In other Quebec box office news, Denis Villeneuve’s Maelstrom (AAV) has earned more than $493,000 after 29 weeks, while Bernard Emond’s La Femme qui Boit (Christal Films), an official selection at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, has $75,761 at the box office after 11 weeks.
Pierre Falardeau’s historical drama 15 Fevrier 1939 (Christal) has garnered more than $922,000 in receipts after 15 weeks.
The top new release for Remstar Distribution is the French film Le Roi danse, which fetched $32,111 in its May 4-6 opening weekend.
John Greyson’s latest, Law of Enclosures (AAV), adapted from the Dale Peck novel and starring Sarah Polley, Brenden Fletcher and Diane Ladd, had a limited, single-screen opening in Quebec May 4. The weekend take was less than $1,000.
