Terry Gilliam’s fantastical The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus crossed the $1 million mark at the Canuck box office last weekend for E1 Entertainment.
The Canada/U.K. coproduction, late actor Heath Ledger’s final project, added roughly $366,000 in its second week, for a per-screen average of $8,300. It surpassed one million in its third weekend in theaters after opening on Christmas Day, and is currently ranked number one among Canadian-mades and 13th overall for the week ending Jan. 7.
The picture has benefited from vigorous promotion in the U.S., where Imaginarium‘s box office totals $1.9 million to date for distributor Sony Classics, according to Box Office Mojo. It added $1.5 million in its second week when Sony expanded the film to roughly 550 theaters.
The film about a travelling theater troupe and its mysterious new member was marred by the deaths of Ledger and Vancouver producer William Vince, who copro-ed the movie through his Infinity Features shingle with Paris-based Davis Films and Gilliam’s daughter Amy Gilliam. Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell stepped in to complete Ledger’s role.
