Instant Star headed for Latin America

Instant Star has found new life in Latin America, where all four seasons of the teen drama have been picked up by Boomerang, just as its sister series Degrassi: The Next Generation prepares to move to MuchMusic.

The Turner-owned Boomerang will dub all 52 episodes of Instant Star in Spanish and start airing them in March.

‘We anticipate that the universal appeal of the series… to be a huge success with our teenage audience,’ said Vicki Zambrano, channel director of Boomerang Latin America in a statement.

The series by Toronto’s Epitome Pictures originally aired on CTV, running unpredictably in the spring and summer after its 2004 launch, and with more regularity in the U.S. on MTV-owned Nick. It launched the career of star and singer Alexz Johnson — seen recently on Smallville and in Final Destination 3 and due to release her debut album, Voodoo, in March.

Instant Star also ran on MuchMusic, said to be the new home of Epitome’s flagship series Degrassi: TNG. The erstwhile music channel has aired D:TNG before, but with the upcoming tenth season is understood to be the teen drama’s new, first-run home; sidestepping from CTV.

Echo Bridge Entertainment has previously sold Instant Star to Canal J in France, Spain’s Antena 3, Israel’s Noga Communications and others.
