TVA Films has acquired the Canadian rights to Rodrigo Garcia’s drama Mother and Child, with a release date set for May 7, in lockstep with U.S. distributor Sony Classics.

The ensemble drama, which debuted as a gala at last year’s TIFF, is centered on three women in Los Angeles and the choices they make for their children, and stars Annette Bening, Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson. It is exec produced by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel).

The film is also currently screening in the Spotlight program at Sundance.

The Colombian-born Garcia is known for his directing chops on TV series including HBO’s In Treatment, Six Feet Under and Carnivàle. Among his feature film credits are Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her and Nine Lives. He is the son of Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez.
