Canadian films abroad

The following is a summary of Canadian films and coproductions selected for upcoming festivals:

* Alliance Atlantis’ Morvern Callar by Lynne Ramsay (an unofficial U.K./Canada coproduction) is the opening film at the 56th Edinburgh International Film Festival, Aug. 14-25

Cry Woman by Bingjian Liu (unofficial South Korea/Canada coproduction), Spider by David Cronenberg and Un Crabe dans la tete by Andre Turpin are also on the program.

* Canada will be well-represented at the 9th Japan International Animation Festival (Aug. 22-26). In competition are Ame noire by Martine Chartrand, The Boy Who Saw the Iceberg by Paul Driessen, Flux by Chris Hinton, La Pirouette by Tali and Strange Invaders by Cordell Barker.

* The 13th Sao Paulo International Short Film Festival (Aug. 22-30) has selected three Canadian films for official competition: Dix minutes avant de mourir by Michel Cayla, Cannes winner The Stone of Folly by Jesse Rosensweet and Three Sisters on Moon Lake by Julia Kwan.

* Six Canadian films and coproductions have been tapped for the 59th Venice Mostra, taking place Aug. 29 to Sept. 8. In the official competition are Au plus pres du paradis by Tonie Marshall (France/Spain/Canada), Julie Walking Home by Agnieszka Holland (Germany/Canada/Poland) and Little Dickie by Anita McGee. Between Strangers by Edoardo Ponti (Italy/Canada) will screen out of competition. Cathay: Poems by Ezra Pound by Bernard Dew and Shadowy Encounters by Garine Torossian are also on the program.

* Following its Cannes Film festival premiere, Atom Egoyan’s Ararat has been selected to open the Toronto International Film Festival, Sept. 5-14.

* Of the 35 projects accepted for presentation at the No Borders International Co-production Market section of the IFP market in New York (Sept. 27 to Oct. 4), several are from Canada, including Underground Man from producer Luc Dery (associated with distrib Film Tonic) and Wagner’s Will from BBR Productions (Spectra) producer Suzanne Girard. The market section is a pitch format for projects in development from established producers and is organized in partnership with Telefilm Canada, the U.K. Film Council and the Filmstiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen of Germany.
