eOne, Brad Weston launch new studio

California-based Makeready will develop features and TV projects for premium cable and OTT platforms.

Entertainment One has partnered with former president and CEO of U.S. prodco New Regency Brad Weston to launch a new global content company.

Culver City, CA-based Makeready will develop and produce original features and television for premium cable and OTT platforms. The studio will release two pictures annually beginning next year, according to a release announcing the new venture.

Under the terms of the agreement, eOne is funding Makeready’s launch, including new content that the partnership greenlights.

eOne will handle international distribution of all its TV content. It will also handle theatrical distribution in Canada, the U.K., Australia/New Zealand, Benelux and Spain, while Universal Pictures will handle worldwide theatrical marketing and distribution in all other worldwide territories.

The company currently has several projects in development, including Saigon, a TV series from Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson’s Appian Way and writer David James Kelly.

Weston will serve as CEO, with New Regency’s former president of production Pam Abdy heading Makeready’s exec team.

During Weston’s tenure at New Regency, the prodco landed 34 Academy Award nominations and 12 wins, for films including The Revenant and 12 Years a Slave.
