With cameras now rolling on its last ever episode, Orphan Black picked up seven CSAs at The Academy of Canadian Television and Cinema’s creative fiction gala on Wednesday night.
The Temple Street-produced series collected prizes including Best Direction in a Dramatic Series (John Fawcett), Best Photography in a Dramatic Program or Series (Aaron Morton), Best Writing in a Dramatic Series (Graeme Manson) and Best Picture Editing in a Dramatic Program or Series (Jay Prychidny).
CBC shows were the night’s other big winners, with the Murdoch Mysteries Christmas special claiming four awards and Baroness Von Sketch Show, Kim’s Convenience and The Tragically Hip – A National Celebration all receiving three apiece.
A Merry Murdoch Christmas, which aired in December 2015, took home prizes for Best TV Movie or Limited Series, Best Direction in a Dramatic Program or Limited Series (Michael McGowan), Best Writing in a Dramatic Program or Limited Series (Peter Mitchell) and Best Original Music Score for a Program (Robert Carli).
Meanwhile, Frantic Films’ Baroness Von Sketch Show won awards for Best Variety or Sketch Comedy Program or Series, Best Writing in a Variety or Sketch Comedy and Best Picture Editing in a Variety or Sketch Comedy (Mike Fly, Jeremy LaLonde).
Elsewhere, CraveTV original Letterkenny staved off competition from Kim’s Convenience, Mohawk Girls and What Would Sal Do? to prevail in the Best Writing in a Comedy Program or Series. The New Metric Media-produced series also won the Best Direction in a Comedy Program or Series (Jacob Tierney).
In the children’s categories, the award for Best Animated Program or Series went to CBC’s The Curse of Clara: A Holiday Tale (produced by Toronto’s Smiley Guy Studios). Meanwhile, Sinking Ship Entertainment’s Odd Squad (TVO) bested Backstage, Degrassi: Next Class, Make It Pop and Wild Kratts to claim the Best Children’s or Youth Fiction prize.
As well, PAW Patrol, produced by Spin Master with animation from Guru Studios, won the Best Pre-School Program or Series, while Degrassi: Next Class won Best Writing in a Children’s or Youth Program or Series (Alejandro Alcoba) and Best Direction in a Children’s or Youth Program or Series (Eleanore Lindo).
Overall, programs and series airing on CBC walked away with 18 awards on night two, with Bell Media taking 11, DHX three, Corus four, TVO three and Super Channel two.
