Global has put a new face on its late-night programming, and it’s the smiling mug of Jebb Fink, a comic and TV host newly hired away from the morning show on Calgary’s A-Channel to host Global Late Night, a show-in-the-testing set to air in June.
Global is shooting four one-hour eps and will test the results on audiences Saturdays at midnight, starting June 12. The net is looking to fill the gap left by Mike Bullard, whose late-night talker was canned in March, and has given the job to producer David Rosen.
Rosen had planned to mount a variety-style show – and may yet – but network execs reportedly had other ideas, and put forth an unusual format described as ‘intelligent talk.’ Each ep of Global Late Night will be a panel discussion about a particular topic – reality TV, hockey, Canadian celebs – hosted by Fink and debated by guests.
The show may become a series for fall, although Fink’s continued involvement is not guaranteed. Fink worked for seven years at A-Channel’s The Big Breakfast and turned out comedy specials for both CTV and CBC. He is also a veteran of the Just for Laughs festival.
‘I saw him in Calgary years ago and he was extremely funny,’ says Rosen. ‘His comedy is very timely and he’s not afraid to get bitey, to get controversial. He just worked in perfectly.’
The network recently announced other summer programming – debuting the courtroom drama The Jury, a U.S. series from Barry Levinson that happens to star Oshawa, ON native Shalom Harlow, on June 7. Local talent also surfaces in The North Shore, a Fox drama airing June 18 with Cory Sevier (Decoys) on the payroll. Global also picked up the Showtime series The L Word, about a circle of lesbian friends living in L.A., set to air in August.
Global is also sticking with reality shows and will air new runs of Last Comic Standing, Who Wants to Marry My Dad? and Big Brother through June and July. Sports highlights later in the season include the NBA Finals, the Molson Indy and the PGA Tour. Global is expected to announce its fall lineup in the coming months.
