William F. White/Vilmos Zsigmond Cinematography Scholarship
Paul Bronfman (pictured right), chairman and CEO of Comweb Corp and William F. White International announced the winner of the inaugural William F. White/Vilmos Zsigmond Cinematography Scholarship at Whites’ Sept. 13 TIFF reception. Adam Madrzyk, a fourth-year film studies student at Ryerson University, took home the $3,000 prize. The scholarship was created to help provide young Canadian cinematographers with access to post-secondary education. It was named in honour of Oscar-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond, who died at the beginning of the year.
Canada-Italy doc incentive renewed
The Canada Media Fund and the Italian Directorate General for Cinema of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Activities and Tourism have renewed their incentive for the codevelopment of documentary projects between Canadian and Italian producers. The Canada – Italy Codevelopment Incentive for Documentary Projects’ budget is set at CAD $200,000, with each partner investing half of the total amount.
Groupe V Media launches Noovo.ca
Groupe V Media has launched a new VOD and online content service to offer users a destination for all forms of entertainment. Content on Noovo spans music, television and interactive games from V, MusiquePlus and MAX, with a collection of exclusives such as the original web series La Fouille (a comedic variety show based on the V Télé linear series Ca décolle!), non-fiction short-form series Ambulance animales, and unaired content from linear series such as La Trappe, Tu m’aimes, tu mens, Beach Club and Célibataires et nus Québec. Full episodes of some of Groupe V’s television content will also be available after their linear airings.
Time Warner invests in Ottawa-based You.i TV
Time Warner Investments has led a $12 million Series B funding round for You.i TV, an Ottawa-based company that has built a multi-screen video app platform for TV and media cos. The company’s You.i Engine platform is behind the shomi SVOD service and Sony Crackle, among others. Along with the investment, Time Warner Investments managing director Scott Levine will join the You.i TV board.
Fargo wins at Creative Arts Emmys
The Creative Arts Emmys were handed out over two nights on Sept. 10 and Sept. 11 in Los Angeles, and Alberta-shot Fargo won in two categories. Fargo picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited Series, Movie or Special for “The Castle,” with co-supervising sound editors Kurt N. Forshager and Joe Bracciale, sound effects editors Robert Bertola and Paul Shikata, music editor Mark Bensi and Foley artist John Elliott winning. The series also won for outstanding cinematography, with director of photography Dana Gonzales picking up the award.
