Decode moves Sadie

School is out for Decode Entertainment. The company has backed down from its fight with residents of an east Toronto neighborhood, and now says it will move its series Naturally, Sadie out of nearby St. Aloysius school by the end of August.

The move ends a bitter feud with the residents of East York, who have complained about noise, light and traffic related to the sitcom shoot.

Naturally, Sadie shot its first season in the unused Catholic school over the fall and winter.

‘We decided that we didn’t want to shoot in an area where we’re not wanted and where we were likely to face disruption of our production,’ says Decode Partner Steven DeNure. Decode insists the shoot was not disruptive. ‘In any case, we’re happy to have it resolved.’

The company had hoped to stay at St. Aloysius until next year and had applied to temporarily rezone the property, but the neighborhood blocked the application at community council. The matter was due to be heard at city council when Decode withdrew its request on July 18.

‘We’re immensely relieved,’ says activist Ruth Childs. ‘We hope to work with the Toronto Catholic District School Board and the city to find an appropriate long-term use of the property.’
