The story ‘Lawsuit won’t block Water’ in the Sept. 12 issue of Playback reported on Deepa Mehta’s lawsuit against several parties whom she alleges made public accusations of plagiarism against the filmmaker. Unfortunately, the Playback story also incorrectly stated that the defendants countersued against Mehta.

In fact, Playback was wrong in reporting that a summons had been issued to Mehta, as no lawsuit had been brought against her. The defendants to Mehta’s action did request an order staying her claim, but this was ultimately unsuccessful. Mehta’s representatives inform Playback that the defendants have since acknowledged to the court that there was no plagiarism. Mehta (or her representative) is scheduled to appear in an Indian court to pursue her action.

Playback hereby retracts its incorrect reporting, as described above, and sincerely apologizes to Ms. Mehta.
