Exhibitor Cineplex Entertainment is testing Chicken Little, Disney’s first CG feature toon, in 3D on a modest two screens in Canada, compared to 83 in the U.S.
Ontario’s SilverCity Mississauga and Colossus Woodbridge are using newly installed Christie DLP projectors and special high-reflectivity silver screens, while audiences sport a stylish pair of green glasses similar to those worn by the Little character. Though Cineplex box-office figures weren’t available, early reports have the 3D-equipped screens outselling the 2D showings in the U.S. at a rate of five to one.
Meanwhile, on the small screen, CTV is going 3D (as is U.S. net NBC, marking the first ever 3D HDTV broadcast) on Nov. 21 with a two-hour episode of the hit drama Medium, in which lead Patricia Arquette discovers she can see things no one else can in works of art. 3D glasses were to hit the streets before the ep aired in a marketing campaign that included inserts in The Globe and Mail’s Nov. 19 edition.
A big assist goes to Montreal techco Sensio, which handled all 3D-related aspects of the Medium episode, from storyboards to HD shooting, VFX and broadcast encoding in its proprietary A.F.E. 3D format.
