Saskatoon – The clay animation characters of Wapos Bay are getting the series treatment at APTN and SCN, albeit gradually. APTN has ordered 13 half-hours from Saskatoon’s Wapos Bay Productions and the National Film Board, while SCN has picked up five and is in talks for the rest.

The show builds on the well-received 2002 special Christmas at Wapos Bay, and a half-hour pilot from last year, There’s No ‘I’ in Hockey. The series is directed and written by Dennis Jackson, who also produces with Melanie Jackson and Anand Ramayya.

The Wapos franchise follows the goings-on at a remote northern town. With the series, its makers ‘want to take the story out to the community – a broader perspective so that it’s not just the trapline and the rink,’ says Melanie Jackson.

To that end, Lorne Cardinal (Distant Drumming, Insomnia) has joined the cast, putting his voice along those of the returning Gordon Tootoosis and Andrea Menard. Derek Mazur exec produces for the NFB. Sean Davidson
