Quebec union talks resume

Quebec’s technical unions, AQTIS and IATSE, have resumed talks after a three-week break.

Talks broke off in late May so that, according to AQTIS, its members could take time to vote on a particular issue. Other reports say the Quebec-based union ended the talks because it had reached an impasse with its American rival.

AQTIS now says it will hold a mail-in vote on the still-unidentified issue and will return to negotiations, which are being mediated by Senator Francis Fox, on June 9 (after Playback went to press).

Both unions have agreed to keep their proceedings confidential, as requested by Fox. IATSE had no comment on the talks.

The two unions have been locking horns since IATSE set up a new local in Montreal last year. AQTIS considers the entire province to be its exclusive territory under Quebec’s Status of the Artist Act. Making the matter more complicated, the unions appear to have an overlap in membership, with many technicians belonging to both sides.

The situation hit a low point in March, when the Doug Liman-directed feature Jumper from New Regency Pictures bailed on Montreal in favor of Toronto, apparently due to the union friction.

Montreal has not hosted any major U.S. shoots since before last summer. In late March, Fox was brought in by the province to mediate the talks.
