Toronto-based First Generation Film has boarded actress Chloe Sevigny’s directorial debut, Kitty, with Christina Piovesan serving as producer along with U.S. producer Lizzie Nastro.

The short film, which tells the story of a girl who dreams of becoming a kitten and is transformed into one, is based on a short story by the same name from Paul Bowles. Production on the short wrapped on Sunday following a four-day shoot in Los Angeles. Starring in Kitty is Ione Skye (Say Anything, Arrested Development) and Edie Yvonne. Lee Meriwether (Barnaby Jones) also appears in the film.

First Generation Films founder Piovesan said she was first introduced to the project through a connection she had at William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, which represents Sevigny. Piovesan said she was impressed with the script, and her strong aesthetic vision which stems from her experience as a fashion designer.

“It is totally about supporting and nurturing fresh talent that is coming up, and working with them as they move into long format,” Piovesan told Playback Daily.

First Generation Films also wrapped production this October on Canadian writer Rebecca Addelman’s short, The Smoke, which was shot in Toronto and backed by the Harold Greenberg Fund’s Shorts-to-Features program. Addelman is currently a writer on New Girl and Judd Apatow’s upcoming Netflix comedy Love. The short is meant to help Addelman land financing for an eventual feature film, which First Generation hopes to get into production this year.

Ultimately, Piovesan said the goal is to get Kitty on the festival circuit. The short was shot on a budget of under $100,000.
