Peep and the Big Wide World is up for its second Emmy, and is in the running against contenders including Curious George and Cinar’s long-running Arthur for best animated program for this year’s top kiddie TV honors.
The animated edu-series — seen here on TVO and on Discovery Kids in the U.S. — got the nod when nominations for this year’s children’s programming Emmys were announced at the KidScreen Summit in Washington, DC. The show is produced by Toronto’s 9 Story Entertainment (Skyland) with WGBH in Boston.
Peep won in the same category last year, and will face off against the Ron Howard-produced Curious George, seen on PBS, and the heavyweight Arthur, which has five Emmy wins and a Peabody going back to 1998. Also nominated are NBC’s Time Warp Trio and PBS’s Toddworld.
Strange Days at Blake Holsey High, made by Toronto’s Shaftesbury Films for Discovery Kids, scored a nomination for best children’s series, putting it up against Reading Rainbow, Endurance: High Sierras and Assignment Discovery.
The Great Polar Bear Adventure — an enviro-minded CG-enhanced special by Toronto’s Media Headquarters — also got a nod for best family special along with A Year on Earth and Saving a Species: The Great Penguin Rescue. It aired last year on CBC and on Discovery Kids.
The Children’s Programming Emmys will be awarded on June 15.
