Corus Entertainment is pulling the plug on Teletoon Retro.
The channel, which features throwback cartoon programming such as Looney Tunes and ScoobyDoo, will go off the air on Sept. 1, 2015 at 5:59 a.m.
“After a regular business review, we decided to make some strategic changes to our channel lineup, including the discontinuation of Teletoon Retro. We believe these changes are the most effective way to service our audiences. Corus remains committed to providing high quality, award-winning programming for Canadian kids and their families,” read a statement on the Teletoon Retro website in an FAQ on the channel’s shutdown. The FAQ regarding the shutdown was posted on Aug. 4.
Some of the Teletoon Retro programming will be moving over to Teletoon in September, according to the FAQ.
The decision to remove the specialty channel follows the Let’s Talk TV decisions issued by the CRTC this spring, including the introduction of pick-and-pay. The CRTC also ordered cable companies to offer consumers a $25 entry-level cable package of Canadian channels. These new policies are set to come into effect by December 2016.
Corus Entertainment previously announced it would launch the Disney Channel in Canada on Sept. 1. A Corus Entertainment spokesperson could not confirm if the Disney Channel would be taking over the Teletoon Retro licence, saying that details about the channel’s carriage and distribution would be announced at a later date.
