News channels in B.C. dominate this year’s Edward. R Murrow Awards for Canadian and international regions, with CanWest’s Global B.C. nabbing four awards — more than any other Canadian news department — followed by two each for CHUM’s A-Channel Victoria and CTV Vancouver.
The winners were announced recently in Washington, DC, home of the Radio Television News Directors Association, which will present its Canadian awards at a June gala in Vancouver.
Global B.C. scored for overall excellence in a large market, best investigative reporting, feature reporting, and videography for its ‘Tree into House’ segment — which shows dramatic footage of a large tree falling and destroying a West Vancouver home during a recent storm. Global News Ontario, meanwhile, won best continuing coverage for ‘Terror Threat,’ while CH Vancouver Island earned the prize for best newscast for a small market.
CHUM’s A-Channel Victoria was noted for investigative reporting for a small market, while also nabbing the overall excellence award. Best newscast for a large market went to CHUM’s Citytv Toronto for CityNews at Six.
Meanwhile, CTV Vancouver nabbed best hard news feature and best news series for a large market, while CTV’s flagship station in Toronto, CFTO, won best spot news coverage for its ‘Transit Strike’ coverage.
Other Canuck winners include CTV Atlantic for feature reporting and videography for a small market, and CBC affiliate CFJC-TV Kamloops for best hard news feature, small market.
