Paul Sarossy was feted yet again at the Canadian Society of Cinematographers Awards on Saturday — taking best feature cinematographer for his work on the Neil LaBute thriller The Wicker Man.
Sarossy beat out DOPs Yves Bélanger, who was nominated for Cheech, and Jan Kiesser, up for Beowulf & Grendel, at the annual gala in Toronto. He has seven other CSCs under his belt, for titles including 2005’s Head in the Clouds and the 1999 TV drama Rocky Marciano.
Best lensing on a TV drama went to Danny Nowak for the CBC mini Dragon Boys, while René Ohashi took home best work on a TV series for the ‘Special Delivery’ episode of Kidnapped. The NBC series, which aired here on Global, was cancelled last fall.
Montreal cinematographer Pierre Gill, who was nom’d last year in the feature film category for the Maurice Richard biopic The Rocket, was presented with the Kodak New Century Award for his contribution to the art of cinematography. Gill has won numerous CSC awards for his work on films including Souvenirs intimes (1999), The Art of War (2000) and Lost and Delirious (2001).
Other special honorees at the Toronto gala included cinematographer Richard Stringer, who won the Fujifilm Award for his contributions to the CSC, and Helmut Cremer, who was presented the Bill Hilson Award for his role in developing the Canadian film industry.
