Toronto post-production house Pixel Underground has completed an upgrade of its facilities, including a new 4K grading theater.
The purpose of the new 4K grading theatre is to allow post-production teams of up to 15 people to gather in the same space and carry out post work. The 4K screening room features a DaVinci Resolve colour grading system, 14-foot projection screen, 55 inch evaluation grade monitor and a DCI-compliant digital projector.
In addition to the theater, a 4K online finishing suite was added to Pixel’s facilities. The finishing suite includes an Avid Symphony Nitris station, with Nuke and AfterEffects composition also available to clients.
While shooting in 4K is relatively common today, Pixel Underground is one of only a few facilities in Toronto where producers, directors and cinematographers can collectively review 4K work at full resolution, said Marc Bachli, president Pixel Underground, in a statement. “We’re bringing 4K to the mainstream feature and television market,” the statement read.
Construction on the new facilities cost upwards of $200,000 and began when additional space on the second floor in the company’s office became available, said Marcus Valentin, VP, Pixel Underground.
Pixel Underground has been in business for over five years and was acquired by the SIM Group at the end of 2014. The new facilities will also allow Pixel to better collaborate with other SIM Group-parented companies such as audio specialists Tattersall Sound and Picture and post-production technology and services provider Bling Digital.
“Our long term goal is to accommodate the higher-end drama series work and the feature film market as well, which we could do before, but this [new facility] is fully 4K capable from an evaluation standpoint,” Valentin told Playback Daily.
Another area that Pixel is beginning to expand further into is VFX, added Valentin. Previously the company has done smaller pieces of VFX work for various projects, but Pixel has only recently begun producing its own visual effects for entire series.
Pixel’s recent catalogue includes post-production work for Discovery (Canada and U.S.), BBC, National Geographic, Corus Entertainment, Shaw Media and Scripps Network.
