Rudy Buttingnol has a new job, again, and has stepped in as interim president and CEO of Knowledge Network. Buttignol — best known for his 13-year stint at TVOntario — takes over at the B.C. channel as it finalizes its break from the educational umbrella group Open Learning Agency, replacing Bill Harlan, who sat as interim head for roughly five years.
The nine-time Gemini winner brings ‘enormous wealth and experience’ to the job, said Knowledge Network chair Ron Burnett in a statement. ‘Rudy’s leadership, creativity and innovation will serve Knowledge Network well.’ Buttignol will divide his time between B.C. and Toronto, according to a channel spokesperson, and recruitment for a permanent placement will begin shortly.
The new posting comes less than a year after Buttignol stepped down as TVO’s creative head of programming to take a contract position as its commissioning editor for documentaries.
He developed and commissioned more than 200 docs through TVO’s The View From Here series, which he created in 1994, and shared Gemini wins for titles including Dying at Grace, Hitman Hart: Wrestling with Shadows and Yo-Yo Ma Inspired by Bach. He shared a nomination for an Oscar in 2004 for the short Hardwood.
He is also due to receive the first Outstanding Industry Achievement Award from the Hot Docs festival on Tuesday.
