The tragic death of Vancouver Island teen Reena Virk is being turned into a second feature film, this time by Brightlight Pictures and Rhombus Media, in collaboration with Reese Witherspoon’s Type A Films.
Under the Bridge is based on the 2005 investigative book by Toronto-born Rebecca Godfrey, who researched and recounted the murder of 14-year-old Virk by eight fellow students in Saanich, BC. Virk was beaten and drowned after being bullied by a group of teens, who did not report the incident to police. Her body was found eight days later.
Another Reena Virk movie is in the works at No Equal Entertainment.
Brightlight revealed its plans Monday night at the Vancouver premiere of the Paul Gross-starrer Gunless, also a copro with Rhombus.
Shawn Williamson and Stephen Hegyes of Brightlight (Fifty Dead Men Walking) will produce with Rhombus’ Niv Fichman (Passchendaele) and Witherspoon and Jennifer Simpson of Type A (Penelope). The film will shoot in Vancouver though no start date has been set.
‘Rebecca’s book is a stunning and heartbreaking tale that looks at a very dark side of teenage life. We are committed to bringing Under the Bridge to the big screen and making a film that does this story justice,’ commented Simpson in a release.
According to Larry Sugar of No Equal, his project will focus on the events leading up to Virk’s death, whereas Under the Bridge, like the book, looks to focus on the trial. ‘They are totally different stories,’ he says. ‘Ours is about bullying, bigotry and prejudice.’
Writer Daegan Fryklind (The Guard, jPod) recently delivered his script to No Equal.
