Bell Media’s MTV Canada and U.S. net TeenNick are ending Degrassi this summer after 14 seasons on the air.
“Thank you to Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn, and all the cast and crew at Epitome Pictures for delivering Bell Media with 14 years of creative and engaging content that truly captured the spirit of Canadian youth through truthful and provocative stories,” said Phil King, President – CTV, sports, and entertainment programming in a statement. “We are immensely proud of Degrassi, and our longstanding partnership with Linda and Stephen. We wish the entire Epitome team the best of luck, and look forward to working with them again in the future.”
“For an incredible 14 seasons, Degrassi has been a groundbreaking show tackling so many important topics that real teens face in their everyday lives,” said Keith Dawkins, SVP and general manager, Nicktoons, TeenNick and Nick Jr, in a statement. “In the final episodes on TeenNick and through the hour-long special and social activations, we hope to say goodbye in a way that is both fitting to the show and Degrassi‘s passionate fan base.”
Both MTV Canada and TeenNick will start airing the final episodes of Degrassi on July 20.
On TeenNick, the final 12 episodes of Degrassi will kick-off with a hour-long special on July 20, with new episodes airing from Monday to Friday at 9 p.m. over two weeks.
At 8 p.m. on July 31, TeenNick will air an hour-long special titled It Goes There: Degrassi’s Most Talked About Moments, where fans, creators and cast members will share their memories of the show prior to the hour-long series finale, to bow at 9 p.m.
Bell Media did not provide any details about how the final 12 episodes will roll out on MTV Canada, or any additional specials linked to the series finale.
While the Degrassi series in its current iteration will wrap its run on TV this summer, a statement from DHX Media (which acquired Degrassi producer Epitome Pictures in 2014) indicated there may be more news to come about the franchise.
“Degrassi is one of DHX Media’s marquee brands and we expect to be able to provide an update in the days ahead for fans, the media and the market. The Degrassi fan base runs deep worldwide and the longevity of the series speaks for itself. Stay tuned for further developments regarding Degrassi,” the statement read.
Degrassi is produced by Epitome Pictures and was co-created by Linda Schuyler, who also serves as executive producer along with Stephen Stohn, Sarah Glinki and Matt Heuther.
