Vimeo has introduced new subscription tools for Vimeo on Demand, which allows creators to charge fans a monthly fee for unlimited viewing of their content.
In addition to the subscription model, creators on Vimeo can also offer their content on an a-la-carte basis for sale or rental as a way to generate revenue outside of pre-roll advertising.
“Subscription video on demand (SVOD) is a natural extension of Vimeo’s transactional VOD platform, giving creators a new way to sell content to viewers worldwide,” said Kerry Trainor, CEO, Vimeo, in a statement. “Online video is entering an exciting new stage where creators don’t have to rely on pre-roll advertising alone to earn money, and Vimeo is building the open global platform for paid video distribution.”
Creators could already offer Vimeo content on an a-la-carte basis for sale or rental. With the new SVOD offering, creators can set their own pricing for monthly subscriptions, and have the option of offering subscriptions worldwide or in specific countries of their choice.
Creators can sell subscriptions and content hosted on Vimeo via the Vimeo On Demand storefront, or on any website of a creator’s choice via Vimeo’s embeddable HD player. Creators can also sell their content via the Vimeo Publisher’s Network, which is a network of publishers, including The Atlantic and TVguide.com, that host Vimeo content on their sites.
In addition, the new SVOD program provides creators with the option to give users free subscription trials, as well as offer free episodes and release bonus materials to help build up audiences. Creators can use a stats dashboard to access subscriber data, and creators keeps 90% of revenue generated after transaction fees.
The subscription tool, much like the pre-existing transactional VOD business, is targeted towards niche and mid-tail to long-tail content, including instructional videos, a Vimeo spokesperson told Playback Daily. The service allows creators to offer all their content to users at a lower price point in a monthly subscription, rather than forcing users to buy each piece of content individually at a potentially higher overall price point, the spokesperson added.
There are plans to further expand Vimeo’s SVOD offerings in the coming year.
