Yukon For Sale set for June premiere on CMT

How the unique twist of far-north housing considerations - such as "where do I hang my moose meat?" - hooked Corus on Proper's new series.

Given that it’s likely not first on most house hunters’ lists, the unusual slant made it an ideal vehicle for CMT’s entry into shelter-based original programming, says Tracy Martin, director of programming, woman and family at Corus Entertainment.

“It’s unique for us because it’s in the real estate space, which is a category we are dipping our toe into on CMT,” says Martin.

The 13 x 30 series was created by Toronto-based Proper Television and pitched to Corus as a possible fit for CMT. The series’ greenlight was announced last fall. It will premiere on Saturday, June 13 at 9 p.m.

Narrated by Canadian country music star George Canyon, tell the stories of house hunters looking for properties in the Yukon, where the exotic locale makes for an equally exotic set of housing requirements.

The series was shot between August and October 2014, with the Toronto crew flying in to film for two weeks in each month.

It was anything but smooth sailing, noted Amy Hosking, director and series producer for Proper, in an interview with Playback Daily.

Local realtors, she said, were at first extremely distrustful of, and hesitant to work with, the crew. The show’s producers found that the best way to build working relationships with realtors from Yukon was to first approach ex-Toronto realtors that had relocated to the territory. Once local realtor saw that positive collaboration was possible, the process became a lot smoother.

What is known in the territory as “Yukon Time” also became a factor in trying to complete tasks on schedule, said Hosking, as the pace of life in Yukon, compared with the “code red” pace of city life, caused some friction between the crew and the local film board and realtors.

Proper Television president Guy O’Sullivan serves alongside Hosking as executive producer for the series.
