Brunton talks up Walk

Producer John Brunton is hoping the wide appeal of host Eugene Levy will draw more viewers to Canada’s Walk of Fame when the 10th annual gala airs Sunday at 7 p.m. ET on CTV.

‘In many ways the show is tailored to Eugene…With these live presentations that’s what we tend to do — we did it with the Junos as well,’ Brunton tells Playback Daily, noting that the veteran comic has been ‘very involved.’

A bevy of talented Canadians will be inducted into the Walk of Fame, including former Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Johnny Bower, SCTV comedian Catherine O’Hara, actor Gordon Pinsent, director Ivan Reitman, activist Rick Hansen, actress Jill Hennessy (Law & Order, Crossing Jordan), rock group Nickelback, and CTV news anchor Lloyd Robertson.

Brunton, who exec produces through his Toronto-based Insight Productions (Canadian Idol), says they’re trying to speed up the pace of the two-hour event to keep it ‘snappy,’ but offers that the Walk, which to date has honored 101 Canadians, isn’t just another awards show.

‘You’re celebrating a person’s entire career, so to shoehorn that into a 30-second speech or a two-and-half-minute presentation, is not what we intend to do,’ he says.

Presenters slated to introduce the inductees include Ron Ellis, Peter Keleghan, George Stroumboulopoulos and Pamela Wallin. Insight EVP Barbara Bowlby and Walk founder Peter Soumalias also exec produce. Louise Wood produces for the third time.

CTV’s eTalk is providing nightly profiles of this year’s inductees — and of Levy and likely future inductees — leading up to the event broadcast. The network will make the gala available for viewing immediately afterwards on its website.
