The Sopranos delivers for TMN and MC

The final episode of The Sopranos handed The Movie Network its largest audience since the pay-TV channel began measuring viewership seven years ago.

The 86th episode of the popular HBO mob drama, entitled ‘Made in America,’ drew 77% more viewers to TMN on Sunday at 9 p.m. than the average for the series’ previous eight episodes, which began airing in April. Though Movie Central did not provide figures, a spokesperson says The Sopranos finale ‘more than doubled’ its audience in comparison to the rest of the season.

On HBO in the U.S., the finale grabbed an average 11.9 million viewers, although many fans on both sides of the border were baffled by the show’s abrupt, cut-to-black ending.

Meanwhile, the fifth-season premiere of CTV’s Canadian Idol nabbed a solid 1.6 million viewers on Tuesday, June 5 at 8 p.m. for a 90-minute episode, down from last year’s season debut, which averaged 1.8 million. This year’s premiere peaked at just over two million viewers.

Also on CTV, about 344,000 viewers tuned in to watch Canada’s Walk of Fame on Sunday, June 10 at 7 p.m., which this year feted eight new Canadian inductees, including comedian Catherine O’Hara, actor Gordon Pinsent and director Ivan Reitman. The show peaked at 520,000 viewers.

In sports, the Stanley Cup Finals on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada drew an average 2.5 million viewers for the series between the Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Ducks, down 18% from last year’s Edmonton Oilers/Carolina Hurricanes match-up, which averaged three million. More than two million tuned in for game five on Wednesday, June 6, which saw the Ducks hoist the Stanley Cup after a 6-2 victory over the Sens, peaking at 2.8 million viewers.
