Canada’s SIM Group has officially opened the doors on its New York outpost, a new Bling Digital office in Brooklyn, New York City.
Bling Digital, which was acquired by the SIM Group in 2008, is a postproduction and technology services provider specializing in on-set data management, digital dailies, editorial system rentals and data archiving.
The move to offices in New York is a first for SIM Group and comes amid increased demand for post-production services.
“We were lucky enough to be asked to provide services in New York for a couple of pilots in March and April in 2014… Forever for Warner Bros. and then we did another show called The Following,” Rob Sim, co-founder of SIM Group, told Playback Daily. With requests for Bling Digital’s services in New York reaching a total of six shows, Sim says the decision was made to acquire additional equipment and expand to a large office instead of continually sending in a crew to New York.
“[The crews] were working out of hotel rooms or we just subleased a small office space but the reaction in the market seemed to be pretty positive, they liked what we were doing, so we’re just going to see how things go from here,” he said.
The 10-person office is within walking distance of Steiner Studios, the largest U.S. film and television production studio outside Hollywood. Heading up the New York office is Bling Digital’s workflow producer, Leo De Wolf, who was previously based in Toronto.
Sim said he hopes that the success Bling Digital has had in New York could act as a springboard for some of SIM Group’s other divisions. In a release accompanying the announcement, the New York office opening was described as a “foothold” for other SIM companies, such as Tattersall Sound and Picture. “We’re looking carefully at that market, and there may be some opportunities [there],” Sim said.
Currently, Bling Digital’s New York office is providing services and equipment for Universal Cable Productions’ Mr. Robot which is shooting in New York.
