She’s everywhere.
Debbie Travis has become a brand unto herself in Canada – CBC’s Kirstine Stewart aptly calls her a ‘mogul’.
Travis’ face is now so recognizable that when she pops up on billboards to support the Breast Cancer Cure Foundation, her own name is the smallest print on the poster. ‘The CBC is lucky to have her,’ says Stewart of Travis’ upcoming primetime series for the pubcaster.
The 8 x 60 reality series (The Debbie Travis Show – working title) will spotlight eight unsung heroes – from coast to coast – and launch this fall in the burgeoning Sunday night slot after Heartland and Battle of the Blades, according to Stewart, CBC TV’s general manager who greenlit Travis’ new show.
Stewart began building the Sunday night block when she joined the Ceeb four years ago and believes the ‘community hero’ show is a shoo-in.
‘I think Sunday night is another opportunity for the CBC to celebrate Canadians,’ says Stewart, adding that she believes now is the time to ‘celebrate our heroes and successes as much as we can.’
So ironically, the home improvement diva’s new home on CBC is not about homes, although she made her mark with decorating hits such as Debbie Travis’ Painted House.
According to the British-born Travis, the show ‘is about what this country’s made of, and that’s community. It’s not about victims; it’s about heroes. We need to really care at the ground roots,’ she says, adding that is why CBC ‘is the right home for this show. We’re celebrating Canadians.’
The series will launch this fall – which means a summer shoot – so the pressure is on now to find the right heroes.
‘Get onto that website
(www.cbc.ca/debbietravis) and send us your heroes,’ says Travis.
