Cannes to showcase three Canadian immersive projects

Making its world premiere at the competition is Zazie Films’ Canada/Luxembourg coproduction La maison de Poupée.

Three Canadian immersive projects will screen at the 78th annual Cannes Film Festival for the second edition of its Immersive Competition.

The competition takes place from May 14 to 23 at the Carleton Hotel in Cannes, France.

La maison de Poupée (The Dollhouse), is making its world premiere and is taking part in the festival’s Immersive Competition. La maison de Poupée is produced by Luxembourg’s Wild Fang Films and Toronto’s Zazie Films.

The animated virtual reality (VR) experience co-written and co-directed by Charlotte Bruneau and Zazie Films’ Dominic Desjardins puts audiences in the shoes of a nine-year-old girl who uses the power of her dollhouse to untangle troubled memories.

Two more Canadian coproductions will be taking part in Cannes’ Immersive Selection – Focus program, for Luxembourg projects that give festival-goers insight into the creation process of immersive projects.

They include Ceci est mon cœur from Luxembourg’s a_BAHN, France’s Lucid Realities and Montreal’s PHI Studio. The experience from Nicolas Blies and Stéphane Hueber-Blies has audiences explore a reconciliation story between a child and his body.

Oto’s Planet from Luxembourg’s Skill Lab, Montreal’s Dpt. and France’s Small Creative rounds out the Canadian selections. The VR and augmented reality narrative experience tells the story of two people whose peaceful life on their secluded planet is disrupted by a crashing spaceship and its irritable passenger.

The immersive project previously won the Reflet D’Or for the Best Immersive Experience at the 30th Geneva International Film Festival.

The jury of the Immersive Competition comprises jury president and French filmmaker Luc Jacquet, U.S. artist and musician Laurie Anderson, French author Tania de Montaigne, U.K. filmmaker Martha Fiennes and Japanese video game creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi.

The winner of the Best Immersive Work award will be announced at the Immersive Closing Ceremony on May 22.
