Netflix renews Geek Girl for a second season

Boat Rocker has acquired the rights to the show from Corus, including those for the first season, according to a release from Netflix.

Netflix has renewed its young adult coming-of-age series Geek Girl for a second season, nearly a year after its first season premiered.

The announcement was made in a release from the streaming service, noting that the upcoming season is slated to film in the summer in the U.K. with plans to release in 2026.

Boat Rocker has acquired the rights to the series from Corus, according to the release, with the Toronto-headquartered company producing alongside Zoë Rocha’s London-based RubyRock Pictures. In addition to overseeing all creative and production, Boat Rocker will lead global distribution and franchise management for the series.

Holly Smale, the author of the book series the show is based on, and Jessica Ruston remain as series’ creators while Ireland’s Declan O’Dwyer returns as director. Smale is a writer for the second season along with Sameera Steward, Sally O’Leary, Grace Link and Sophie Wu. Geek Girl follows an awkward teenage girl who is unexpectedly thrust into the world of modelling.

Executive producers on the series are Rocha and Robbie von Werz for RubyRock Pictures with Smale and Ruston. Additional executive producers are Jeff Norton and O’Dwyer as well as David Fortier, Ivan Schneeberg, Nick Nantell and Jon Rutherford for Boat Rocker.

Emily Carey (House of the Dragon) will reprise the main role of Harriet Manners with Emmanuel Imani (The Wheel of Time), Liam Woodrum (Based on a True Story), Tim Downie (Outlander) and Jemima Rooper (As If) also returning.

The 10 x 30-minute first season was produced by Toronto’s Aircraft Pictures and RubyRock Pictures, in association with Corus’ Nelvana. It premiered on Netflix, outside of Canada, on May 30, 2024 and debuted as Netflix’s No. 7 most popular English-language series globally before moving up to No. 2 the following week. The series spent four weeks overall in Netflix’s global top 10, reaching the national top 10 in 89 countries. Geek Girl came to Netflix in Canada in November 2024.

In Canada, the series originally premiered on Corus’ StackTV and, according to Corus, was the No. 1 first-streamed kids program and a top five first-streamed show on StackTV during the first seven days on the platform.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Holly and Emily again, and that Boat Rocker has come onboard, to continue to build and expand the fabulous Geek Girl universe,” said Rocha in a statement. “Let’s see what magic Harriet Manners can sprinkle on to the fashion world this time round.”
