Sherry Media Group acquires eight docs for STEM on IMAX film series

Film screenings for the first season of STEM on IMAX began Earth Day on April 22 and will run through World Oceans Day on June 8.

Sherry Media Group has acquired the theatrical screening rights to eight documentaries for the launch of its STEM on IMAX limited film series.

The first season of STEM on IMAX showcases the eight previously released mid-length documentaries at 34 IMAX Cineplex and Landmark Cinemas locations nationwide in order to provide educational content to Canadian cities and communities which have historically had limited access. Ticket costs for the screenings are uniformly priced at $7.99.

The screenings began on Earth Day, April 22, with Toni Myers’ Jennifer Lawrence-narrated A Beautiful Planet 3D (IMAX Entertainment; pictured). A new film will screen each weekend until the final film, Nick Robinson’s Ocean Odyssey (Wild Pacific Media, Definition Films, K2 Studios), releases on World Oceans Day June 8.

The other films that are part of the series include Caspar Mazzotti’s Mountain Adventure: Out of Bounds (Wild Pacific Media, Definition Films), screening from April 25 to 27; The Patrick Stewart-narrated Journey to Space 3D (K2 Communications, Giant Screen Films) directed by Mark Krenzien, screening from May 2 to 4; and Daniel Ferguson’s Chris Evans-narrated IMAX Superpower Dogs (Cosmic Picture), which screens May 9 to 11.

Stephen Low’s Secrets of the Universe 3D (K2 Studios), screens from May 16 to 18; the Morgan Freeman-narrated IMAX Born to be Wild 3D, from producer Drew Fellman and director David Lickely, screens from May 30 to June 1; and the Michelle Williams-narrated IMAX Deep Sky (Crazy Boat Pictures) from Nathaniel Kahn, screening June 6 to 8.

School groups will also be able to book any of the films at the participating theatres regardless of the film’s screening dates. Sherry Media Group also has a second iteration of the series in the works, a spokesperson for the company told Playback Daily.

“STEM on IMAX is an immersive visual learning tool that will be available to cities and communities across Canada that have historically had limited access to educational content,” said Sherry Media Group CEO Jim Sherry in a statement. “Through our partnership with IMAX and their national network of state-of-the-art cinemas, we’re bringing this imaginative and awe-inspiring educational experience to Canadians everywhere. It’s a premium visual journey that reflects the gold standard in global cinema today.”
