Northwinds Productions’ Drink docuseries records Webby win

Other winners include the CBC podcast Personal Best and the indie game Balatro.

Toronto-based prodco Northwinds Productions has won a Webby Award in the Video & Film section’s Food & Drink (Series & Channels) category for its docuseries Drink: A Look Inside the Glass.

The Webby Awards honour excellence on the internet and are presented and selected by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a global organization that looks to drive the creative, technical and professional development of the internet.

The 29th annual Webby Awards will be hosted on May 12 at New York’s Cipriani Wall Street by comedian and actor Illana Glazer. Last year’s awards received close to 13,000 entries from over 70 countries.

Drink: A Look Inside the Glass is directed by Northwinds Productions co-founders and executive producers Brad and Ryan Freeman with each episode exploring an alcoholic beverage, where it is produced and the people who make it.

The 5 x 45-minute series, which was independently funded, is currently available on platforms such as Tubi and Fawesome, Brad Freeman tells Playback Daily, with production beginning in 2022 and wrapping in 2024. Freeman said that they will be looking to get the series on as many platforms and channels as possible to present it to a global audience.

Additional winners for this year’s Webbys include CBC for its comedic self-improvement podcast Personal Best and New York, L.A. and Vancouver-based Titmouse, winning for the seventh season of Netflix’s animated comedy series Big Mouth.

The AI, Immersive & Games section saw a raft of awards go to Playstack’s poker-based indie game Balatro, created by the anonymous Canadian developer LocalThunk. Its wins included the Strategy & Simulation category and the Independent Creator category.
