CRTC sets new dates for two postponed hearings

Hearings on defining and supporting "Canadian program" and the sustainability of the broadcasting system have been reset, while the date for the hearing on Canadian and Indigenous audio content has not yet been confirmed.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has set new dates for two of its three postponed public Cancon hearings.

The hearing originally scheduled for March 31, The Path Forward – Defining “Canadian program” and supporting the creation and distribution of Canadian programming in the audio-visual sector has been moved to May 14 while The Path Forward – Working towards a sustainable Canadian broadcasting system, previously scheduled for May 12, has been moved to June 18.

The third postponed hearing, The Path Forward – Supporting Canadian and Indigenous audio content, originally scheduled for June 18, has not had its new date confirmed at press time.

The CRTC postponed the hearings following Prime Minster Mark Carney’s calling of a federal election on March 23, with Canadians voting on April 28.

During an election period, as per the caretaker convention, the government is tasked with exercising restraint as parliament has been dissolved and the current government cannot assume that it will remain in power following the election. The convention holds until a new government is sworn in or the incumbent is re-elected.
