Crave’s Canada’s Drag Race: Canada vs. The World and Prime Video documentary Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe led the unscripted winners at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards on Thursday (May 30).
The third day of Canadian Screen Week kicked off with the Documentary, Factual, Lifestyle, and Reality Awards, hosted by Your Morning‘s Anne-Marie Mediwake.
Canada’s Drag Race: Canada vs. The World (Blue Ant Studios) won six awards overall, including Best Host or Presenter, Factual or Reality/Competition for Brooke Lynn Hytes, Brad Goreski and Traci Melchor (pictured).
Shelagh O’Brien picked up Best Direction, Reality/Competition for the series, which also earned awards for writing, picture editing, sound and casting.
Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe (marblemedia, Hawkeye Pictures) won five awards altogether, including Best Direction, Documentary Program for Rob McCallum and the Barbara Sears Awards for editorial research and visual research. Additional honours were for writing and production design/art direction.
Citytv’s docuseries Black Community Mixtapes (Oya Media Group) and CTV’s now-ended lifestyle talk show The Marilyn Denis Show took home three awards apiece.
Black Community Mixtapes won Best Original Music, Documentary for La-Nai Gabriel along with awards for photography and sound. The Marilyn Denis Show won Best Talk Series, Best Host, Talk Show or Entertainment News for Denis, and Best Direction, Lifestyle or Information.
Crave docuseries Thunder Bay (Entertainment One) picked up two awards: Best Factual Series and Best Writing, Factual for Ryan McMahon and Michael Allcock.
Additional winners at the ceremony include CBC Indigenous’ Time to Eat with Best Lifestyle Program or Series; CBC’s Stuff the British Stole (Cream Productions, Wooden Horse, WildBear Entertainment) with Best History Documentary Program or Series; APTN lumi’s Little Bird companion doc Coming Home (Wanna Icipus Kupi) (Rezolution Pictures) with the Donald Brittain Award for Best Social/Political Documentary Program; and Crave’s Broken: Inside the Toxic Culture of Canadian Gymnastics (TSN) with Best Documentary Program.
Canadian Screen Week continues in the evening with the Cinematic Arts Awards, followed by the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards Gala on Friday (May 31). The television craft and performance awards were handed out on May 29, while the news, entertainment and sports categories were announced on May 28.
