Deals: Cineflix Rights, Sinking Ship, SiriusXM Canada

Cineflix Rights adds a trio of docs to its MIPTV slate, Sinking Ship Entertainment scores licensing deals for Odd Squad, and more.

Cineflix Rights has acquired three new high-end doc titles for its MIPTV slate, as the market prepares to launch its last edition in Cannes next week.

Among the trio is Little Sapiens (1 x 60 minute), which employs the latest technology to explore how prehistoric children may have been the drivers of human evolution. The doc was produced for CBC by Montreal’s Idéacom International.

Also on the list is Moments That Shook Music: Kurt Cobain (1 x 60 minutes, pictured), which offers a visceral, moment-by-moment account of the days leading up to and following the Nirvana frontman’s suicide. The one-off was produced by Touchdown Films for BBC Two, which will premiere it as part of a slate of Nirvana-themed programming this month.

Produced by Pernel Media for France’s Planète+ and C8, Ramses the Great: King of Ancient Egypt (6 x 60 minutes) employs cutting-edge science and access to the latest archaeological discoveries for a docudrama account of the legendary pharaoh, whose real life and personality have often remained occluded by the myth surrounding him.

Sinking Ship Entertainment

Toronto-based prodco Sinking Ship Entertainment has struck a raft of new consumer product deals for its live-action educational comedy series Odd Squad (108 x 22 minutes).

In the U.S., Sinking Ship has signed a deal with St.Louis-based Really Big Coloring Books to manufacture and distribute up to 14 Odd Squad books by the end of this summer. Product drops have already begun, with the publisher launching two new coloring books at Walmart, Amazon and PBS affiliate e-commerce sites earlier this month.

Sinking Ship is also partnering with Oklahoma-based ice cream chain Braum’s to launch a new licensed kids’ meal toy program in Q2 at more than 300 of its storefronts across the U.S. Braum’s has also developed kids meals for a wide range of brands, including Blippi (2023), Max and Ruby (2021) and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood (2019).

Meanwhile, France TV Distribution brokered a deal for the Odd Squad franchise with French publisher Larousse. As part of the agreement, Larousse will roll out three new licensed titles in the territory this fall, on the heels of launching the IP’s first two books earlier this month.

SiriusXM Canada

SiriusXM Canada has signed an agreement with Suits actors Patrick J. Adams and Sarah Rafferty to create an original podcast centred on the series.

Adams and Rafferty will re-watch and break down each episode of the legal drama, which ran for nine seasons on USA Network and has seen a resurgence in interest via streaming on Netflix.

Suits was filmed in Toronto between 2011 and 2019. Adams and Rafferty will share behind-the-scenes stories about the production, and will be joined by special guests from behind and in front of the camera.

The podcast is produced by Kimmie Gregory, Cassi Jerkins and Kristin Shrader, with Adams and Rafferty serving as executive producers alongside SiriusXM’s Adam Sachs, Codi Fischer and Colin Anderson.
