Canadian documentaries Red Fever and Lost in the Shuffle will make their world premiere as part of Hot Docs festival’s Special Presentations program.
The festival unveiled the full Special Presentations lineup for its 2024 edition on Tuesday (March 12). It includes a total of 14 films from around the world.
Neil Diamond and Catherine Bainbridge’s Red Fever (Rezolution Pictures) is produced by Lisa M. Roth and Rebecca Lessard. The doc sees Cree filmmaker Diamond travel across North America and Europe to explore “the world’s fascination” with Indigenous people and their impact in shaping modern Western culture. The film is distributed by Les Films du 3 mars.
Directed by Jon Ornoy, Lost in the Shuffle (Animal Mother Films), centres on world champion Canadian magician Shawn Farquhar. The film is produced by Ornoy and Ana Carrizales.
The special presentations lineup also includes the Canadian premiere of Barry Avrich’s Born Hungry (Melbar Entertainment Group). The film follows the life story of Sash Simpson, from the streets of India to becoming Toronto’s top chef. Born Hungry is produced by Avrich, Jay Hennick and Mark Selby. The film made its world premiere at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January. Independent Artist Group is the sales agent.
International films making their world premiere in Hot Docs’ Special Presentations lineup include Todd Bieber’s American Cats: The Good, the Bad, and the Cuddly (U.S.); Emmanuel Reyé’s Le Mans 55: The Unauthorized Investigation (France); and Samuel Habib and Dan Habib’s The Ride Ahead (U.S.)
The 2024 edition of Hot Docs will take place from April 25 to May 5.
