Fawzia Mirza’s The Queen of My Dreams has sold to more than 20 territories ahead of its U.S. premiere at SXSW this weekend.
International rights holder LevelK announced the deals on Friday (March 8), which includes a release in the U.K. and Ireland via Peccadillo Pictures.
The Queen of My Dreams began its run with a world premiere as part of the Toronto International Film Festival’s Discovery section, before going on to its international premiere at the BFI London Film Festival. It’s set to make its U.S. debut in Austin, Texas, where it will run in the SXSW Festival Favorites section.
The film will begin its theatrical release in Canada, where it will appear in more than 30 markets through distributor Cineplex Pictures, starting on March 22.
The film is directed and written by Mirza (Signature Move) and produced by Jason Levangie (Kids vs. Aliens) and Marc Tetreault (Suck It Up) for Halifax-based Shut Up & Colour Pictures, as well as Andria Wilson Mirza for Baby Daal Productions.
Financial support came from Telefilm Canada, the Canada Media Fund, and Screen Nova Scotia, as well as provincial and federal tax credits.
“The Queen of My Dreams is a mother-daughter story, a celebration of the joy, power and resilience of Muslim and South Asian women,” said Mirza in a statement. “It was a dream come true to shoot this film in Pakistan and Canada, and it is the realization of an even bigger dream to now have the chance to share it with audiences around the globe.”
