TikTok’s annual short film competition with the Cannes Film Festival has opened up to Canadians in its third year.
The #TikTokShortFilm competition runs from Feb. 21 to March 15 and includes three categories: Grand Gagnant, Best Script and Best Directing.
The grand prize-winning filmmaker will take home €10,000 (about C$15,000), while the awards for Best Script and Best Directing films include a cash prize of €5,000 (about C$7,500).
Creators can take part by submitting original videos (a minute or longer) in TikTok’s signature vertical format using the hashtags #TikTokShortFilm and #TikTokShortFilmCompetition. Eligible creators must be 18 or older and hold a valid passport to travel to France, according to the terms and conditions.
TikTok is an official partner of Cannes, which takes place from May 14 to 25.
Past winners include Madalena Aragao and Lucas Millions Dutra, who won best script at #TikTokShortFilm 2023 for their short (Nos) na Cabeça. The film was named the Revelation of the Year at Portuguese entertainment awards Globos de Oruo Gala. Millions Dutra went on to land deals with leading Portuguese TV channels and is currently writing and directing a web series for Channel 4.
