Protagonist launches copro feature Spirit in the Blood at EFM

The Canada/Germany copro from writer and director C. May Borgstrom is produced by Toronto's Elevation Pictures and Hamburg's Junafilm.

Protagonist Pictures is launching international sales for Canada/Germany copro feature Spirit in the Blood at the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin.

Spirit in the Blood is a coming-of-age thriller, written and directed by Hamburg, Germany-based Canadian filmmaker C. May Borgstrom, and marks her debut feature.

The film is produced by Toronto’s Elevation Pictures and Hamburg prodco Junafilm, in association with Logical Content Ventures. Elevation’s Noah Segal and Junafilm’s Verena Gräfe-Höft serve as producers, while Kari Hollend is a co-producer.

Spirit in the Blood follows a group of teenage girls who decide to battle evil spirits that they believe killed a young girl in their secluded religious mountain community.

The cast includes Summer H. Howell (Curse of Chucky), Sarah-Maxine Racicot, Michael Wittenborn (All Quiet on the Western Front) and Greg Bryk (Saw V).

Executive producers include George Hamilton, James Pugh and Janina Vilsmaier for Protagonist; Frédéric Fiore, Céline Dornier, Pascal Hostachy and Louis Ladrey for Logical Pictures; and Christina Piovesan, Laurie May, Emily Kulasa and Adrian Love for Elevation.

Spirit in the Blood is produced in coproduction with German broadcaster NDR and in collaboration with European pubcaster Arte.

The film is also produced with the participation of Telefilm Canada, Ontario Creates, Crave, the MOIN Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, the German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the German Federal Film Fund, and the media strand of the European Union’s Creative Europe Programme.

EFM runs until Feb. 21.
