Two new lumi originals among APTN’s winter lineup

The short-form series Jason and Cultural Craftsmanship: Moccasins join a lineup that includes the French-language version of Little Bird.

A PTN has unveiled its 2024 winter broadcast and streaming lineup, which includes newly announced originals for APTN lumi.

Lifestyle series Cultural Craftsmanship: Moccasins launches on the streamer on Monday (Jan. 8), while the short-form drama series Jason (pictured) will premiere on Feb. 14, according to a news release.

Jason (6 x 15 minutes) is written and directed by Andrew Genaille and produced by Tanis Parenteau and Jessica Wadsworth. Genaille is also the executive producer. The series centres on a young Indigenous man whose values are tested after he moves from a reserve to the city, and navigates university life.

The show’s cast includes Parenteau, Peter Robinson, Stefany Mathias, Jason Deline, Tahmoh Penikett, Shae-Lynn Pearson, Mitch Saddleback, and Jarrod Daniel.

Cultural Craftsmanship: Moccasins is written, directed and produced by Erica Daniels under her Winnipeg-based banner Kejic Productions.

The 7 x 5-minute series, hosted by Chantel Morgan, is aimed at providing “step-by-step instructions for cultural craftsmanship projects and traditional teachings to accompany them.” In the series, Morgan guides viewers through the process of making a pair of moccasins.

Landing on APTN, meanwhile, is the French version of the acclaimed series Little Bird, co-created by Jennifer Podemski and head writer Hannah Moscovitch. The six-part Crave and APTN lumi limited series is produced by Rezolution Pictures and OP Little Bird. The French version premieres on Jan. 15.

Docuseries Treaty Road, which explores the history of treaty signings between 1871 to 1921 and completed production in early 2023, premieres on APTN on March 5, and will be released on lumi the following day.

The 6 x 60-minute series is directed by Plains Cree filmmaker Candy Renae Fox, who is also a producer alongside 3 Story Pictures’s Saxon de Cocq, Hannah Hermanson and Ell McEachern. The series was borne out of de Cocq’s exploration of his Métis heritage. He hosts Treaty Road with Erin Goodpipe.

Returning shows on APTN include season two of the comedy Acting Good (20 x 22 minutes; Kistikan Pictures), which premieres on March 19, and on lumi on March 20. The series’ second season first premiered on CTV Comedy on Oct. 16, 2023. Meanwhile, season four of the docuseries Red Earth Uncovered (52 x 30 minutes; Sagacious Media) will premiere on Jan. 10, and on lumi on Jan. 11.

APTN is also continuing its partnership with Sportsnet on Hockey Night in Canada in Cree, which offers commentary in Plains Cree. The coverage includes four games, starting Jan. 27.
