The Société de Développement des Entreprises Culturelles (SODEC) invested a total of $203 million in Quebec’s cultural sector in 2022-23, according to its annual report.
More than $137 million was spent on the the film and television production sector to support 864 projects, including a temporary aid fund of $48.7 million which was injected into 455 projects on which filming had stalled due to COVID. The $137 million accounted for more than 67% of its overall cultural sector support during the fiscal year.
SODEC supported a total of 1,328 projects through various programs in the film and TV production sector, music, literature, arts and crafts and the art market.
Production support accounted for approximately a third of the funding to the sector, with 91 projects receiving $44.2 million. Another $22.5 million was allocated to eight Quebec-based companies under the corporate assistance program. More than $10 million went to 163 projects via the promotion and distribution assistance program.
Ten projects received $4.5 million as part of a program to increase the production value of Quebec series for international export. A total of 79 projects received $3.9 million via the support program for emerging creators, while 46 projects received $2.6 million in development support, among others.
Total revenue for SODEC during the fiscal year came to $236.9 million, with total expenses hitting $227.8 million. The majority of its revenue came from government subsidies ($210.1 million), followed by interest from investments ($12 million) and interests on loans and repayable aid ($3.8 million).
