Buffalo Gal Pictures’ Brandice Vivier and Jennifer Beasley, co-chairs of On Screen Manitoba, said in a joint statement that Somers’ “dynamic leadership style, coupled with her [industry] relationships and deep understanding of the industry’s intricacies, positions her as the ideal leader to lead On Screen Manitoba to new heights.”

“I look forward to working closely with the industry’s talented professionals, stakeholders, and partners to enhance the growth and vibrancy of Manitoba’s film and television community,” added Somers.

Somers’ appointment comes as Manitoba prepares to go to the polls on Oct 3. in a provincial election.

Manitoba’s screen industry has been on the agenda, with incumbent premier Heather Stefanson and her Progressive Conservatives party promising to commit $4.5 milliontoward local soundstage facilities and labour. The party’s platform also includes a 10% tax credit bonus for the predominant use of local music in a production.

The party’s official opposition, the NDP, has also mentioned a commitment to boost the industry by modernizing the film and video production tax credit in its platform.
