Quebec City-based Amuz Distribution has acquired the dramedy series Larry.
The 10 x 60-minute series is produced by Montreal’s Avenue Production and written and directed by Patrice Sauvé.
The series centres on a former undercover police officer (Benoît Gouin), whose reputation is tarnished from a corruption case, and must now navigate life as a security guard at the age of 62, according to a news release.
Larry is the second acquisition for Amuz since its rebrand from ComediHa! Distribution earlier this year. It recently picked up the rights to Pixcom’s comedy series Contre-offre (Counter Offer).
KO Distribution
Montreal-based KOTV’s distribution arm has added three new series to its slate ahead of MIPCOM.
KO Distribution has acquired the first season of the comedy Squall (12 x 30 minutes; A Média) and two dramas from Ugo Media: Fem (10 x 30 minutes) and Detox (6 x 10-14 minutes). Unis TV is the broadcaster for both series.
Radio-Canada is the broadcaster for Squall, which follows a star veterinarian and TV host whose life is turned upside down after an incident with a dog on live TV causes a scandal.
Fem centres on a teenage hyper-pop singer who grapples with questioning his gender identity and finds an outlet through music and his online life to explore his femininity anonymously.
The short-form drama Detox follows a 17-year-old who enters a rehab after his best friend’s overdose, and finds himself attracted to a girl in a setting “where everything that should push them apart brings them closer together.”
MIPCOM runs from Oct. 16 to 19 in Cannes.
Sinking Ship Entertainment
Toronto’s Sinking Ship Entertainment has signed a deal with educational toy company Safari for a new plush toy based on the CG rendered chimpanzee character Greybeard from the live-action/CG-hybrid series Jane.
Jane is produced by Sinking Ship in association with the Jane Goodall Institute and is currently streaming on Apple TV+. It follows nine-year old Jane Garcia on her journey to help save wild animals around the world.
9 Story Media Group
Dublin-based 9 Story Distribution International, the international distribution arm of Toronto-based 9 Story Media Group, has announced that its new animated preschool series, Lu & the Bally Bunch (75 x 7 minutes) has been acquired by BBC’s CBeebies channel for release in 2024.
The series debuted earlier this year on Cartoonito in the U.K. and Latin America and CBC Kids in Canada, and will be launching on Cartoonito in the U.S., and across Europe, the Middle East and Africa in the near future. It has also been licensed to ABC Australia, TVNZ+ (New Zealand), SVT (Sweden), YLE (Finland), RTÉ (Ireland) and PCCW (Hong Kong).
Produced by 9 Story Studio’s Brown Bag Films with the participation of Warner Bros. Discovery and CBC Kids, the show was created by Brown Bag Films’ director Nicky Phelan (Vampirina), who also directed the series. It was inspired by his mother’s experience running a preschool from their home. The series follows Lu, a ladybird who has just started preschool with her new friends.
Worldwide distribution rights for Lu & the Bally Bunch are held by 9 Story Distribution International, while 9 Story Brands has worldwide consumer products rights.
Super Channel
Edmonton-based broadcaster Super Channel has acquired the historical drama documentary Royal Mob from Entertainment One (eOne). The four-part series, which eOne picked up for distribution earlier this year, will make its Canadian debut on Super Channel Fuse on Oct. 15, with each episode available on Super Channel On Demand the following day.
The Nutopia-produced series combines scripted drama with commentary from historians and tells the story of the extended royal family, dubbed “The Royal Mob” by Queen Victoria, that once ruled all of Europe, and how their loves, marriages and feuds triggered the First World War. The cast is led by Michele Dotrice in the role of Queen Victoria.
