Producers Nancy Grant and Anam Abbas were lauded at the 2023 Indiescreen Awards on Thursday (Sept. 7).
The ceremony took place in-person at the Glenn Gould Studio at CBC, kicking off day one of the Toronto International Film Festival. The annual awards are presented by the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA), and are open to producers of a Canadian film scheduled to premiere in the 2023 calendar year.
Grant (pictured right), co-founder of Montreal’s Metafilms, won the Established Producer Award in recognition of her more than 15-year career as a film producer, most recently of Monia Chokri’s film Simple comme Sylvain. The award, which comes with a $20,000 cash prize, was presented by a jury chaired by last year’s winner, Damon D’Oliveira, and which also included Stefania Scarfo, Aisling Chin-Yee, Juanita Peters and Rose Schimm.
Abbas (pictured above) won the Kevin Tierney Emerging Producer Award, along with a $10,000 cash prize, for her work on Zarrar Kahn’s In Flames, under the banners Other Memory Media and Citylights Media.
The award jury was chaired by last year’s winners Sara Blake, Magali Gillon-Krizaj and Tyler Hagan, and other jurors included Hilary Hart, Sasha Leigh Henry, Luisa Alvarez Restrepo and Albert Shin.
“The Indiescreen Awards bring the industry together to honour the extraordinary talent of Canada’s independent producers, who give blood, sweat and tears to bring to life the incredible stories that inspire us all,” said CMPA president and CEO Reynolds Mastin in a statement. “Congratulations to the winners – we are thrilled to celebrate and recognize your impressive accomplishments and your contributions to the domestic production sector and beyond.”
