TIFF adds Ladj Ly’s follow-up feature to 2023 lineup

Ly's Les Indésirables will have its world premiere at the festival's 48th edition.

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has revealed the first international title that will have its world premiere at the 48th edition.

Ladj Ly (pictured), the French filmmaker behind 2019’s Les Misérables, will return to Toronto to present his latest film, Les Indésirables.

Les Misérables marked Ly’s feature directorial debut and was an official selection of the 2019 festival, where it had its North American premiere.

The film also received the jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was also nominated for a Palme d’Or, as well as several César awards, ultimately earning an Oscar nomination for Best International Feature Film.

Les Indésirables is a “timely tale of revolution,” according to a news release. The film is set in the suburbs on the outskirts of Paris and depicts working-class tensions following the appointment of a new, young mayor.

TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey said in a statement that the “deeply personal film beautifully captures the struggles and aspirations of a community, reflecting Ly’s unparalleled storytelling skills.”

Les Indésirables is represented by Paris-based film sales company Goodfellas and is a sales title for TIFF.

The festival previously announced Taika Waititi’s upcoming feature Next Goal Wins as the first world premiere in the 2023 lineup.
